The Illusion of Importance

Why is it that we often get so caught up in titles? RN, MBA, Col., JD, PhD, VP, Sgt., CPA, VIP. What is it about these silly little words that matter so much? They define what we do professionally, or our level of education, or accomplishment, or whatever, but they don't define us as a person.

I've come across people who are hesitant to share their job title out of embarrassment; like they've already made up my mind for me that what they do is insignificant. It seems as though that because they don't have a string of letters chasing their name, they aren't valuable to society.

And it's not only that we allow ourselves to be titled but we embrace it, crave it, want to flaunt it. And I don't get it! It could be that we want so badly in life to feel like we're important. We want to make a difference and be recognized for it. And somehow with a title we feel validated. We create an illusion of importance by giving ourselves titles.

Yet titles are just words! You go from one company to another and the same word that commanded respect in one turns out to be the word for the entry level position in the other. It's so pointless to put so much worth on words.

Titles does not make someone himself, but after so much effort and time spent to get it; let them use their title as they want :-).

Sometimes, we just run after some titles to show that we did not give up, but went till the end of the road. If title does not match the personality, there is something wrong. Anyhow, titles are just tools for first impressions, nothing beyond. The time spent for it should teach something to that person, if not that is just lose of time and resource, and they will lose the respect of others faster compared to the others...Kinda risky :-)...

Well, what about some people who do not share their titles just to be more reachable?...Titles does not just give illusion of importance or mark the importance, but sometimes push others away. One way or the other, I think it is our prejudgement against titles. If we learn just to care about the person, they will not bother us or give illusion of importance to them.

You know what else I've noticed that is bizarre when it comes to titles? In order to get anywhere you have to have the right combination of sequence of letters. For example, you can't just have MBA or RN after your name, you need to have sequences, like MBA, CPA, or BSN, ARNP and so forth. I mean, if you look at some people business cards there are more letter sequences on there than are in their entire name, but without the proper sequences they would never have even gotten the job interview.

I have a dream, and that dream is that we appreciate each other for who we are as people. No one is better than anyone else, so why do we always have to act like we are? Are there any real people left out there?

Okay, I think I'm done rantng now. Yup.
